Clapperton, —, [note] was the author of a song in the Maitland Collection,
[note] entitled Wa Worth Maryage! It is possessed, says Mr. Pinkerton, [note] of the most
exquisite neatness and simplicity. He omits to notice that it is, at the same time, grossly
licentious. “Bowdoun,” which is the scene of the poem, is a village on the
south side of the Tweed, about a mile west of Old Melrose. Clapperton
appears to have been a contemporary of Dunbar.
